Joyce Hall hailed from West Virginia.<\/h5>\n

\n She said her high\u00a0school experience was great because she was\u00a0just ‘Miss Everything’. She then attended\n West\u00a0Virginia\n University followed by Barry College\u00a0and did graduate work at the University of Miami. \u00a0After a couple years\n as\n a\n middle\n school English\u00a0teacher, she was summoned to Nova as a substitute. \u00a0Due to outstanding performance, she was\n made\u00a0a\n ‘permanent’ sub within the year and was then\u00a0offered a full contract.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n Nova was conceived as a modern experimental\u00a0state of the art school for science and math. \u00a0The conceivers\n didn’t\n get\n the\n importance of ‘the arts’ in the beginning. With Allen’s predecessor\u00a0and as she recalls, “help from the\n Buckleys”,\u00a0Joyce\n directed 2 musicals that were performed\u00a0at a neighboring high school since Nova didn’t\u00a0have a performing\n facility.\n She\n said\u00a0a bunch more about doing those shows that she\u00a0didn’t want in print. She then became\u00a0very busy in the\n English\n department and simply\u00a0waited for Allen to arrive.\n <\/p>\n <\/div>\n

Allen knew that music was\u00a0his profession at a very early age.<\/h5>\n\n

\n While\u00a0Joyce was jitterbugging across West Virginia,\u00a0Allen was growing up on a farm in\n central Ohio. \u00a0\u00a0He attended Graham High School with a graduating\u00a0class of 98 people. He went to Morehead\n University\u00a0in Kentucky on a full music scholarship for 2 years then transferred to the Cincinnati\n Conservatory\u00a0of\n Music. He graduated from the Conservatory\u00a0of Music with a degree in Music Education and\u00a0a double major in\n Piano and\n Organ.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n The move to Florida was also destiny.\n Many times in the middle of winter on the farm\u00a0feeding livestock in 10 below zero weather,\u00a0he would say to\n himself,\n “If\n I ever get\u00a0out of here its going to be a warmer place.” \u00a0His 2nd year of college he was one of those\u00a0‘spring\n break’\n visitors to Fort Lauderdale,\u00a0and within 15 minutes of arriving, knew this\u00a0was where he was coming after\n graduation.\n Allen\u00a0had sent his resume to both Broward and Dade\u00a0Counties looking for a music teaching position\u00a0and within\n a\n couple of\n weeks of graduation,\u00a0he received a call from the head of music for\u00a0Broward County Schools, Ron Davis. There\n was\u00a0a\n position open at the experimental high school\u00a0Nova and Ron thought he should be considered\u00a0for the job.\n <\/p>\n

Joyce and Allen would be the first to say that\u00a0none of their success could have been\n accomplished\u00a0alone.<\/p>\n\n

Number 1 on the ‘most important’ list was Tom Williams.<\/h5>\n

\n Tom was the band director at Nova while Joyce and Allen’s union was developing.\n \n \"tomandallen\"\n <\/a>\n His\u00a0immense talent as a conductor and arranger and\n his ultimate willingness to ‘join the party’\u00a0made the production team complete. There are\u00a0of course others\n deserving\n of\n recognition as\u00a0the performing arts school developed but in\u00a0fear of leaving someone out, they will be\n mentioned\u00a0later.\n <\/p>\n
