Cookie Latham
(Lorna Graves)cookiemame-cookie
After leaving Nova in 1974-

I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education from Florida Atlantic University in 1979. In 1980, I moved to Boone, North Carolina where I worked at Appalachian State University.

While working and living in Boone, I earned my Master of Arts degree, met my husband, Donald, and adopted my daughter, Jessica. My “careers” in Boone included actress, singer, catering coordinator, banquet manager, waitress, bartender, daycare teacher, research assistant, teaching assistant, and part-time faculty member at ASU.

My family moved to Charlotte in 1987, where I taught choral music for 30 years until my retirement in 2017. Over my 30 year career, in addition to directing ensembles and a musical theatre class, I collaborated with my theatre teachers to produce twenty-six musical productions. I had the pleasure of supervising numerous student-teachers from surrounding colleges and universities. In 2018 (when the Social Security checks started to arrive), I retired from my position as soloist and section leader at Covenant Presbyterian Church.
With the arrival of my first granddaughter in 2006, I decided to spend more time close to home and gave up being active in local theatre.  I now have two of my three grandchildren living with me.  Brooklynn (age 14) and Katelynn (age 12) have lived with me since they were infants.  I always tell people I retired to become a stay-at-home mom.  Our small house in Charlotte seemed smaller as the kids grew, so we decided to sell our home in Charlotte.  I think we are the only retired couple who had to look for a bigger house in a great school district!  In the summer of 2018, we found both in Fort Mill, South Carolina.  We are only 20 minutes south of Charlotte, so I am able to still stay connected to all the activities I enjoyed.
I still sing in the Covenant Choir and love to volunteer as much as I am able. I have been assisting the CMS directors with the All-County Honors Choir for the past three years.  In 2019, I became a Blumey judge (our version of the Jimmy Awards).  The Blumeys recognize excellence in musical theatre.  Fun fact: Eva Noblezada was a Blumey winner from Charlotte, sent to NYC to the Jimmy’s, where she was discovered.)
I enjoy traveling to Florida to see family and taking day trips with my grandchildren.  I also enjoy hiking and hope to do more in 2021 at our local greenway.  In addition to my family, I live with my two rescue dogs, Lilly and Nala.
